Welcome to 6th grade! Let me tell you a little bit about myself and 6th grade.
I graduated from Ovid-Elsie Area Schools and spent my elementary years right here at E.E. Knight. I attended Michigan State University and received a bachelor degree in Elementary Education with a major in Social Studies and Fine Arts. I am always continuing to update my education and have enjoyed taking more than 30 credits from several different universities throughout the years.
I have taught at Ovid-Elsie for 28 years. My first two years I taught first grade here at E.E. Knight. After that, I taught 21 years in 4th grade at Leonard, and the last 5 years I have taught 6th grade at Leonard and E.E. Knight. It is so fun for me to see the advances in technology that we are experiencing, especially in education. My interest in Social Studies has fostered an interest in traveling and I have traveled throughout the United States and Europe. My travel experience and my desire to stay on top of the ever changing technology are two areas that help me be a better teacher and bring the curriculum alive for my students.
I grew up on the Maple River with my older sister who works at MSU, my brother who works in the insurance industry in Chicago, and my younger sister who works in the airline industry and lives in Kansas City. My father has passed away, but my mother still lives in the area and is very active with the Elsie Arts Council which is housed in my grandparents’ old home; The Dorman Gallery.
In my time away from school I love to read, bike, walk and do various different kinds of art; some of which include painting, drawing, quilting, and writing. I also love kayaking and have kayaked all the Great Lakes, except Lake Ontario. This summer I camped a lot in a very beautiful spot in Presque Isle County south of Cheboygan with my dog, Mikki. Mikki is a twelve year- old Bichon Frise who tells me what to do whenever he gets the chance.
In my class we study Language Arts and Social Studies. We also focus a lot on meeting our goals in Accelerated Reading and Accelerated Math. You will love all the advantages that being the “Seniors of the Campus” brings, but it also brings high expectations. You are the role models of our school. The younger students watch you and follow your lead. So we expect you to be leaders that are respectful and responsible.
Every year I strive for perfect attendance, to get all my work done on time and in a professional manner, to be a good listener, and to make others feel like I value and respect them while doing this with humor and a positive attitude. While I don’t always hit my mark, it is what I strive for and it is what I expect you to strive for also. I know if we all strive for this we will have a very productive and fun year!
